Abstract

1438865 Concrete columns or struts STAHLWERKE PEINE-SALZGITTER AG 24 May 1973 [26 May 1972] 24793/73 Heading E1W A building element having a cross section with a hollow core is formed with longitudinal spaced apart load bearing compression members 2 which terminate in thrust plates 9, 15 at each end and are prevented from buckling inwards perpendicular to the main bearing direction by concrete 3 between them. Outward buckling is prevented by embracing steel binders 4 which may be loops or helically wound wire coils. The element may be in the form of a column and several elements may be secured together end to end by bolting. Longitudinal main bearing load is prevented from being transmitted to the concrete by a yielding layer 27 between the end of the concrete and a steel thrust plate 15 welded to the members 2. An H-section steel element may be welded to the members 2 adjacent their ends and provide a shoulder 12 and bolting studs 13 for fixing a horizontal beam. The hollow core 5 may be formed by fire resistant permanent tubular shuttering 6 and the bore may house air conditioning ducts opening above a false ceiling. For Figure see next column
