Abstract

1438742 Producing optical fibres CANON KK 2 Oct 1974 [4 Oct 1973] 42756/74 Heading C1M In the drawing of an optical fibre from a number of separate sources of molten glass, a constant head of glass is maintained in each of the rested crucibles 1, 2, 3 containing molten glass by providing them with an overflow 7, 8, 9 and introducing molten glass into each crucible at a faster rate than the glass is abstracted from a spinneret 4, 5, 6 at the base of the crucible. As shown in Fig. 4 a crucible may be provided with a plurality of overflows 8<SP>1</SP>, 8<SP>2</SP>, 8<SP>3</SP>. This enables selection of the required head by blocking off all but one of the overflows with plugs 12. The crucibles are formed of platinum, aluminium, clay or quartz.
