Abstract

1438570 Automatic control TRW Inc 8 Oct 1973 46836/73 Heading G3N [Also in Division G1] The invention relates to an electric dimension gauging system for articles periodically entering a measuring area, and provides a switching circuit for suppressing false signals when the article is not in position. The invention is described with reference to a surface grinder in which the cut is automatically increased after each pass. A sensor of the proximity-type is located at a known height above the table towards the end of its travel, and a "positionindicator" switch is actuated at the end of the travel, Fig. 1, (not shown). The gauge signal may be arranged to stop the machine when the "finished" dimension is reached. A control circuit is shown Fig. 2, the signal from sensor 30 is compared with a required value reference 36 by comparator 34. When the workpiece is in the measuring position switch 46 energizes one input of AND gate 40 so that if a stop-grind signal comes from the comparator (at that time) flip-flop 50 de-energizes the power relay and "RUN" lamp 62 and also lights the "RESET" lamp 58. The control circuit is reset by switch 52. Modifications. The apparatus may be used also for gauging articles conveyed in succession past a measuring station.
