Abstract
1438540 Adhesive coated surfaces, coating apparatus CARRIER CORP 29 May 1973 [7 July 1972] 25457/73 Headings B2E and B2L Adhesive is applied to an object having a contoured surface by heating the surface to a predetermined temperature, conveying the object through a vertically falling curtain of adhesive at a speed to deposit a uniform coating of adhesive on the surface so that a portion of the liquid solvent of the adhesive vapourizes rapidly so that the adhesive will remain where initially deposited and depositing further adhesive on a preselected portion of the contoured surface which is disposed in a generally vertical plane by directing the additional adhesive in a generally diagonal path relative to the falling curtain. The contoured surface may be cleaned prior to the application of adhesive. The adhesive may be a mixture of a thermoset resin and neoprene in hexane or toluene. Pre-heating may be by infra red radiation. In the apparatus shown liquid adhesive is applied to the object 12 previously heated to 175‹F by passage through an infra red heater, by passing the object through curtain 19 supplied under pressure from header 22. Surplus adhesive is collected at sump 21 for recycling. The tubes 24 and 25 supply adhesive in a path diagonal to the curtain to the walls 14 and 15. The coated object then passes to a drying station. A further object to be bonded to the first may then be passed through the curtain of adhesive, partially dried and then bonded to the contoured surface. In a preferred embodiment an elastomeric bellows is bonded to the contoured surface.
