Abstract

1438377 Battery chargers CANADA MINISTER OF DEFENCE 14 Aug 1973 38425/73 Heading H2H A battery charger comprises a pair of input terminals X, Y for connection to a source of charging current, a pair of output terminals Z, Y<SP>1</SP> for connection to a battery to be charged, a series resonant circuit including an inductor L and a capacitor C, a first thyristor SCR1 for enabling the source to charge the capacitor and a second thyristor SCR 2 for enabling the capacitor to supply charging current to the battery. The thyristor SCR1 is initially switched on to charge the capacitor C to twice the voltage V 0 of the source, whereupon the thyristor is commutated off and the thyristor SCR 2 is switched on. The capacitor then discharges into the battery. Triggering pulses for the thyristors are provided by a circuit including an oscillator and multivibrators, Fig. 8 (not shown). The source voltage is greater than the battery voltage but circuits are also described for charging batteries from a source voltage which is less than the battery voltage.
