Abstract

1438355 Coupling agents for rubber compounds PPG INDUSTRIES Inc 31 Aug 1973 [31 Aug 1972] 40995/73 Headings C3P and C3Q Additives for curable rubbers comprise (a) siliceous pigment, and (b) a coupling agent which is a catalytic reaction product of (1) a hydrosilane of formula in which X is halogen or -OR, R and M are H, alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, aralkyl, alkaryl or acyl groups, any of which may be halogen substituted, and n is 1, 2 or 3, and (2) a synthetic unsaturated rubber polymer having at least 1 wt. per cent of its unsaturated groups as pendant vinyl groups, said reaction product having from 0À03-50 parts by weight of hydrosilane per 100 parts of synthetic unsaturated rubber. The coupling agent (b) may be either mixed with, or coated on to, the siliceous pigment (a). The additive may be blended with a further rubber. Examples 1-3 describe the preparation of coupling agents by reaction of SBR with triethoxy silane in the presence of hexachloroplatinic acid as catalyst, and (Ex. 3 only) mixing the product with natural rubber. Example 4 describes the coating of a siliceous pigment with a benzene solution of the silanated rubber of Example 1. Examples 5 and 7 describe the mixing of the product of Example 4 with SBR. Example 6 describes the mixing of a curable rubber which is SBR or natural rubber with the products of Examples 4 or 5 or with both a siliceous pigment and the products of Examples 1, 2 or 3, the compositions also containing other conventional rubber additives including curatives.
