Abstract

1438300 Modifying ferrous surfaces "SA PRB" SA 14 Nov 1973 [16 Nov 1972] 52812/73 Heading C7U A rust inhibitor comprises a tannic acid having M.W. > 1000 and at least 14 -OH groups per molecule and capable of chelating Fe ions, and an organic cross-linker containing at least 2 isocyanate groups per molecule and capable of crosslinking molecules of the Fe chelate of the tannic acid, the tannic acid and cross-linker being retained in solution in a mixture of 5-20 vol % of a glycol monoether, 10-20 vol % of another alcohol, 5-20 vol % of a ketone, and 20-50 vol % water. The tannic acid is selected from a pyrogallic tannin, a gallic or metapolygallic acid glucoside, an ellagic acid glucoside, or a quinic ester of gallic or metapolygallic acid; has purity 80-95%, is totally soluble in EtOH and has viscosity 150- 200 cP at 50 wt. per cent in EtOH at 25‹C. The cross-linker may be an aromatic, aliphatic or cyclic polyisocyanate; the composition is applied to ferrous surfaces after sand-or shot-blasting and before painting.
