Abstract

1438285 Reciprocating conveyers IMPERIAL METAL INDUSTRIES (KYNOCH) Ltd 8 Aug 1973 [25 Aug 1972] 39704/72 Heading B8A Apparatus for conveying plastics tube 57 or other elongate articles comprises two clamping and transfer devices 10, 10a arranged in tandem, each device having an article-engaging tubular clamping member 11 provided with longitudinal slots to enable the wall of the member to resiliently flex radially inwardly. A resilient sleeve 21 formed from rubber tubing closely surrounds the slotted member 11. The member 11 and the sleeve 21 are located within a piston 22 and, by means of valve means 41 which control pressurized air to passageways 42 and an annular channel 39, may be radially compressed. The piston is reciprocable by oil pressure applied alternately, via passageways 47, 47a, to annular channels formed on either side of a flange 25 having seals 26. The oil supply is controlled by an electro-hydraulic servo valve 48-52 in turn controlled by a position transducer 53 mechanically connected to the piston 22. In operation, one of the devices 10, 10a clamps and feeds the tube 57 by half an increment of feed whilst the other device is released from the tube and is returning to its tube-engaging position in readiness to clamp and move the tube the remaining half of the required feed. The member 11 may be formed of individually axially-extending strips or wires anchored at their ends in annular collars. Alternatively, the clamping means may be merely a flexible hose.
