1438184 Moulding hollow components N I KAMOV N N PRIOROV A F KOVALEV M A KUPFER A G SATAROV I S SHERMAN A F VAKULENKO I I KOVYRYALKIN S I STETSENKO V B GOLSTMAN and K N GUSKOV 25 May 1973 25186/73 Heading B5A Hollow load-carrying aircraft components, e.g. helicopter rotors, are made by forming blanks 12 and 13 from sheets 11, e.g. of glassfibre mat, each having a layer of adhesive applied thereto, e.g. an epoxy phenolic binder, placing the sheets on a mandrel 15 and subjecting the sheets to a preliminary compression during which the sheets adhere to each other and the blanks are shaped into an open profile, bringing together the ends of the blanks to form a closed profile with a cavity a, arranging an elastic bag (21), Fig. 9, not shown, in the cavity, placing the resultant component in a mould having an inner shape corresponding to the final shape of the component, and pressurizing the elastic bag to finally press the component into shape. The sheets are shaped on the mandrel 15 by placing a rubber band 16 therearound and enclosing the assembly in an elastic bag 17 which can be connected to vacuum in an autoclave 18. Structural components such as the balance weight 5 can be incorporated into the assembly by further layers 11. Metal blade roots (4), Fig. 1, not shown, can be secured by reinforced blanks (20), Fig. 7, not shown. Boxshaped beams and tubular spars can be made by the process, as well as hollow panels, Fig. 14, not shown.
