1437473 Remote control of TV receiver THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 2 May 1974 [17 May 1973] 23639/73 Heading H3Q A television receiver has a digital counter 20, 22, 24 arranged to be controlled by control signals and arranged to retain a control valve until a further control signal is obtained and a rechargeable battery 32 for supplying the counter 20, 22, 24. Control signals are received by an ultrasonic receiver and decoder 10 to provide up-down control of bi-directional counters 20, 22, 24 whose outputs are fed via digital/analogue converters 26, 28, 30 to control sound volume, and picture brilliance and colour saturation of the TV receiver A rechargeable battery 32 supplies the counters 20, 22, 24 so as to store their count when the receiver power supply is switched off. The draw on the battery 32 can be so small that the battery will last for several months without recharging. When the receiver is switched on the battery 32 is recharged from a rectifier circuit 38 via a diode 34 which prevents discharge through the power supply when the set is switched off. Preferably if the battery 32 fails or becomes disconnected the values set in the counters will be preset to a predetermined normal value being powered directly from the source 38. The receiver can be provided with touch-type controls on its facia. When the wire-less control link is not used the settings can be altered by these touch-type controls which are connected to the inputs of the counters in parallel with the output of the receiver 10. The touch controls can be resistive touch pads with appropriate impedance transformation circuits or in the form of light-pressure switch contacts which connect a potential to the appropriate counter input. The receiver may be adjustable by such touch-type controls alone, the microphone 12 and receiver 10 being omitted.
