Abstract

1437283 Automatic control MACHLETT LABORATORIES Inc 24 April 1974 [26 April 1973] 45029/75 Divided out of 1437282 Heading G3N [Also in Division H5] A radiographic apparatus comprises means for directing radiation through a shutter aperture on to an image receptor, means for adjusting the aperture and distance between source and receptor and an electro-mechanical sensing means providing an electrical output signal proportional to both the size of the shutter aperture and the distance, so that it represents the size of the field of radiation at the image receptor. As shown, a cone 30 of X-radiation generated in a tube 16 passes through a shutter, comprising longitudinally extending leaves 37 of lead which overlap to form a cone. The leaves are connected to a ring 38 which is adjusted, to set the aperture 36, by a motor 138. The ring may be manually adjusted by a knob 40. The cone of radiation passes through a patient 42 to an image receptor 46, such as an image intensifier tube. The tube 16 is carried on a cantilever arm, Fig. 1 (not shown), so that the source-to-image distance S.I.D. can be varied. Variation in S.I.D. is indicated by a coupled drum 106 carrying cams 108 which actuate switches 110 at selected S.I.D.'s to energize lamps 112. In order that the cross-section of the cone 30 is limited to that necessary to cover a screen 48 of the image receptor, a collimation monitoring unit, see Specification 1437282 Division G2-G3, is responsive to signals from a potentiometer 120, representative of S.I.D., a potentiometer 72, representative of image size, and a potentiometer 130, providing feedback from the drive to the cone-ring 38. A logic arrangement is provided whereby the final positioning movement, consequent on a change of S.I.D. or image screen, is such as to tend to keep the cone size at a minus tolerance. In an alternative arrangement, Fig. 7 (not shown), the axis of the cone of radiation is vertical and two motors are employed to adjust plates determining the long and short dimensions of a pyramidal beam of radiation directed towards a rectangular screen of an image receptor.
