Abstract

1436965 Stilbene-azo and stilbene azoxy dyes SANDOZ Ltd 6 Aug 1973 [8 Aug 1972] 37182/73 Heading C4P [Also in Division C2] Salts of stilbene-azo and stilbene-azoxy dyes which contain sulphonic acid groups and in which at least one cation per molecule is an ammonium cation, the remaining cations being selected from tetra (optionally substituted alkyl) ammonium and alkali metal cations, with the proviso that at least one SO 3 H group is in the tetralkyl-ammonium or alkali metal salt form, are prepared by condensing a salt of Formula I in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide or a tetra (optionally substituted alkyl) ammonium hydroxide. Mixtures of dyes may also be produced. Nitro groups present in the product may simultaneously or subsequently be reduced to amino groups. Specified cations in addition to ammonium are lithium, sodium, potassium and tetramethylammonium. The reaction may be carried out in aqueous solution and at elevated temperature. Specified products, which give reddish-yellow, greenish-yellow and orange shades on paper, are mono- or tris-azo.
