Abstract

143,690. Sharman, E. April 14, 1919. Floors, cleaning.-An appliance for scrubbing floors comprises a wheeled frame fitted with a scrubbing-brush 13 having both a reciprocating and a rotary motion, a removable container 21 for clean water supplied to the brush through a valved opening 23, and an endless mop 31 which is passed between wringing-rollers 36, 37 and discharges dirty water into a removable receptacle 33. The frame is provided with a pair of wheels 2, preferably rubber-tyred, on the axle of which are mounted toothed wheels 6 gearing with pinions 7 on a shaft having crank-arms 8 connected to the shaft 12 of the scrubbing-brush so as to produce a reciprocating motion of its bearings 10 in slots 11, the brush shaft having a toothed pinion 14 gearing with a fixed rack to produce rotary motion. Cakes of soap 18 are adjustably and resiliently mounted in a bracket 16 on the bearings of the brush. The clean-water container 21 is of tapering form and has pins 22 resting in notches in the frame. The opening 23 and the valve 24 are long and narrow to provide a thin stream of water for the brush, the valve being controlled from a lever 28 adjacent to the handles 29 of the frame. A squeegee 35 is mounted resiliently between the brush and mop to deflect the water towards the mop. The mop is preferably of absorbent material reinforced by wire or the like, and is of such a length that a sufficient drag is obtained to cause it to pick up the liquid and to move around its guiding-rollers 32, but it may be driven positively. The upper wringing-roller 37 is mounted in a hinged arm 38 so that it may be adjusted with respect to the lower roller and also turned back to allow the mop and the receptacle 33 to be removed. Instead of employing soap blocks, cleaning-powder may be supplied to the brush continuously or intermittently.
