Abstract

1436907 Extruding laminar tubes CROWN ZELLERBACH CORP 26 June 1974 [27 June 1973] 28445/74 Addition to 1166458 Headings B5A B5B and B5N In the formation of a laminar tubular thermoplastics film by inflation of a laminar tube 26 extruding from an annular orifice 24, the layers comprising the tube 26 are brought together as a flat rectangular stream in a die adaptor 2 from which they are discharged to the orifice 24, via an annular die passage 17 around which the stream flows in opposite directions, into an annular laminar stream having a weld line opposite the location at which the flat rectangular stream is introduced into the passage 17. The weld line is eliminated in cutting the extruded tube to form flat film. The laminar tube may be of polyethylene and polypropylene and may comprise two layers, but in the embodiment comprises an inner layer of 0À920 density polyethylene, pigmented with titanium dioxide, and outer layers of the same, but unpigmented polyethylene. The layers are each discharged from one of rectangular adaptor passages 3, 6, 6. The die comprises a bolted together assembly of parts which are replaceable by parts of different size to define extrusion passages of different size, including rings 18, 19, defining the passage 17 and a steel ring 38 which is transversely adjustable, e.g. by eight bolts 39, to regulate the flow of material around the passage 17. Inflation air is delivered through a pipe 34 and the die assembly is heated by oil circulating through passages 27, 32, or electrical resistances, and electrical resistance element 37.
