Abstract

1436900 Metal detectors S HEYTOW 23 May 1973 [26 May 1972] 24671/73 Heading G1N A metal detector comprises a transmitter loop 26 transformer-coupled to a transistor oscillator 34, and two receiver loops 24, 28, spaced either side of the transmitter and connected via transformers 62, 64 in series opposition. A voltmeter 75 is connected to the receiver transformers to indicate the passage of a metal object through the loops. Details:- (i) each loop is preferably a single turn and is tuned to resonance by capacitors such as 66, 68. (ii) The coil assembly is mounted in a PORTABLE passage-way through which people or objects pass Figs. 1, 7 (not shown). (iii) A sheet metal MAGNETIC SCREEN is provided around the coils. (iv) "wing-loops" 58, 60 energized from a tapping on the oscillator coil, through switch 46 are mounted in space quadrature with the main loops Fig. 1 (not shown). The loops are switched in according to the direction of travel to eliminate the double hum response. Figs. 9, 10 (not shown). (v) discrimination is assisted by a "bias" introduced into the loops by a metal fin (78) Fig. 3 (not shown) mounted on the switch arm to couple one or the other set of loops. (vi) Initial balance, with switch 46 on the midde stud 54 (no wing loops), is set by a plate (81) Fig. 3 (not shown) adjustable to compensate for metal adjacent the test station.
