Abstract

1436349 Controlling nuclear reactors GROUPEMENT POUR LES ACTIVITIES ATOMIQUES ET AVANCEES 20 June 1973 [28 June 1972] 29406/73 Heading G6C A control system of a sodium-cooled, fast reactor comprises movable absorber elements each forming the piston of a double-acting liquid sodium operable ram, and means for supplying liquid sodium to the upper or lower faces of the pistons to move them to effect reactivity control. In one embodiment (Fig. 1) the rams 40 are arranged in parallel array between supply conduits 9, 19, there being also a by-pass line 23 including a regulating valve 24. The conduits 9, 19 extend, respectively, from sodium-containing tanks 3, 4 which can be pressurized with argon from tank 10 via valves 7, 8 or connected to exhaust 13 or 14 via valves 17 or 18. For emergency control, valves 7 and 18 are opened and valve 24 maintained closed, to cause the absorber elements to descend into the core. For normal operational control, valve 24 is opened to regulate the amount and rate of movement of the absorber elements. In a second embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) sodium is supplied to the rams by a reversible pump (34) whose input/output conduits (57, 58) have conical end portions (50, 52) overlying spherical end portions (51, 53) of conduits connected, respectively, to lower and upper ends of each ram.
