Abstract
1436210 Fluid actuation of switches C JIM STEWART & STEVENSON Inc 17 Aug 1973 [12 Oct 1972] 38928/73 Heading H1N [Also in Division H2] An underwater electrical connector comprises two parts 12, 14 carrying contacts 22, 30 respectively sealed from the surrounding water by a silicone sealing compound 50, the contact 30 being capable of actuation by an hydraulically operated piston 37 to penetrate the sealing compound and engage the contact 22. The excess compound flows from the recesses 20, 21 through by-pass passageways 54, 52 to the space vacated by the piston. The reverse actuation of the piston separates the contacts. A portion 31 of the movable conductor 32 is coiled within the piston to allow for reciprocation of the contact 30. In a modification, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the seal 51 and sealing compound 50 are replaced by solid resilient seals (60) (62) made of rubber, plastics or neoprene which are pierced by a point (66) on the end of the conductor 32 when the piston is operated to close the contacts.
