Abstract

1435904 Alarm clocks; clocks combined with radios &c D A POLLINGTON 16 Jan 1974 [17 Oct 1972] 47841/72 Heading G3T [Also in Division H3] An adjustable electrical switch 5-8 including an electrically driven timing mechanism 4 is settable selectively to energize and de-energize a radio receiver 2 or to energize and de-energize a cassette tape replay device 3. As shown the arrangement is mains operated but it can be battery operated, the circuitry being transistorized. The radio 2 and/or device 3 can be turned on and off by switches 10, 11. A sleep control cam 7 can be adjusted to turn on a switch 8 and thus turn on the radio 2 and/or the tape device 3 as selected by the switches 10, 11 for a predetermined time while a listener is falling asleep. An alarm cam 5 can be adjusted to turn on the radio 2 and/or device 3 by closing switch 6 at a predetermined time to waken the user. A further alarm such as a buzzer may also he turned on in response to switch 6. The timing is obtained by an electrical clock which can be of digital type. The cassette unit may play a continuous loop of tape or alternatively a further tape unit can be provided for playing a continuous loop so as to provide a repeating wake-up message when the alarm operates. The cassette unit may be switched to record from the radio. A further timing and switching arrangement is disclosed in the drawing accompanying the complete specification (not shown) where "on" and "off" timing impulses are provided electronically or mechanically by means of cams. "On" impulses obtained by closing contacts (12 or 13) energize a relay (R1) which causes contacts (R1/1, R1/2) to close and supply via a selector switch (16) the radio 2 and/or tape device 3. "Off" impulses obtained by closing contacts (14 or 15) energize a relay (R2) which causes a normally closed contact (R2/1) to open so as to de-energize the relay (R1). The contacts (R1/1 and R1/2) of the relay (R1) then open and the supply is disconnected from the radio and/or tape device. With the radio 2 selected by the selector switch (16) and turned on by a timed impulse, the next turn-on impulse may be made to switch on the tape device 3 by momentarily depressing a pre-selector button (18). This energizes a relay (R3) which is held energized by operation of its contact (R3/1). Contact (R3/2) also closes to maintain power to the radio and contacts (R3/3) open. Now by moving the selector switch (16) to select the tape device, the radio remains on and when the "off" impulse occurs the relay (R3) is de-energized to open contacts (R3/1 and R3/2) to turn off the radio 2 and to close the contact (R3/3). The next "on" impulse then turns on the tape device 3. Similarly the radio can be selected to be turned on by the next impulse after the tape device has been turned on.
