1435903 Gripping tools L A STEBBINGS 19 Dec 1973 [29 Sept 1972] 45068/72 Addition to 1287332 Headings B4W and B4B A hand tool adapted to be operated by a single hand of the user comprises a first elongate handle 2 and a second elongate handle 5, a first working jaw 1 at one end of the handle 2, an elongate member 4 pivoted to the other end of the handle 2 and having a second working jaw 3 at its other end, one end portion of the second handle 5 being pivoted to the said one end of the handle 2 and the second handle being connected by a pivotal link 8 to the elongate member, relative movement of the handles 2, 5 causing the jaws to move relatively to each other. The relative dispositions of the pivot points of the link and of the connection between the second and first handles may be varied (Figs. 2, 3, not shown) to alter the mechanical advantage and/or to cause the jaws to be pulled together rather than pushed. In a further embodiment, Fig. 4, the pivotal connection of the second handle 5 and pivotal link 8 is such as to provide a toggle or over-centre locking arrangement for the jaws when closed and screw adjusted mounting means 12 are provided for altering the initial setting of the jaws. The tool may be adapted for use as cutters, pliers, metal shears, hole punches, riveters, crushers bottle openers, dental and surgical instruments, scissor action tools or circlip tools with an opening action.
