Abstract

1435672 Diaphragm cells for alkali metal halide electrolysis TOKUYAMA SODA KK 9 April 1974 [10 April 1973 17 Sept 1973] 15695/74 Heading C7B An alkali metal halide (e.g. NaCl, KCl, NaBr or KBr) solution is electrolyzed in a horizontal diaphragm cell wherein water or an electrolytic solution e.g. a catholyte is supplied continuously or intermittently to the underside of the diaphragm during electrolysis, e.g. from outside the cell through a spray nozzle (12), Figs. 2, 4 (not shown) or by gravity, Figs. 3 and 6 (not shown), or catholyte directly fed by capillary tubes (13), Fig. 5 (not shown) or rotating blades (16), Fig. 7 (not shown). The diaphragm has a waterpermeability of not more than 0À02 ml/cm<SP>2</SP>. cmH 2 O hr, preferably being a cation exchange membrane (a sulphonic, carboxyl or phosphoric acid group bonded to oxidation resistant polymer) e.g. (sulphonated) divinylbenzene-acrylic acid or styrene copolymer, polyolefine, polyvinyl fluorocarbon ether or perfluoroethylene-styrene copolymer. The water or solution e.g. of alkali metal hydroxide may be supplied preferably when the voltage exceeds a predetermined value (Fig. 7) to the undersides of both the diaphragm and a wire gauge or porous plate cathode 2, having a porosity of at least 50% supporting the diaphragm. A liquid maintaining material 3, e.g. asbestos, glass fibres, woven or non-woven fabrics, mats, with or without porous vinylidene chloride, polyolefin, F-containing, polyester or polyamide resins, or porous ceramics, minerals or metals, may be interposed in contact with the diaphragm and cathode and supplied during electrolysis with the water or solution e.g. via pipe 11, (Fig. 6). As shown, alkali metal halide as anolyte 9 is fed via inlet 5 and discharged via outlet 15 and alkali metal hydroxide as catholyte 10 is fed via pipe 11 as atomized spray 12 and discharged via outlet 8, outlets 6, 7 being respectively for halogen and hydrogen gases. A plurality of cells may be superimposed to form a multiple tier horizontal diaphragm cell.
