1435614 Separating oil/water emulsions TEXACO DEVELOPMENT CORP 1 Oct 1973 [26 Oct 1972] 45717/73 Heading C5E [Also in Division B1] A method of converting a water-in-oil "emulsion" into an oil-in-water "dispersion" (both as defined below) comprises adding to the emulsion an effective amount of a demulsifier, then an amount of water sufficient to effect inversion so that the predominant continuous phase is water, and mixing sufficiently to produce an oil-in-water "dispersion". An "emulsion" is defined as a mixture which will not separate on mere standing, a "dispersion" as one which will so separate. Demulsifiers mentioned are oxyalkylated phenolic resins, polymeric amines, glycol esters, fatty acid esters, oxyalkylated polyols and polyoxyalkylene glycols. In examples, water-in-oil emulsions forming oilfield wastes are treated either with a mixture of wetting agent and brine, with stirring or firstly with wetting agent with stirring followed by partial separation into oil and residual emulsion, and subsequently with addition of brine to the residual emulsion with stirring. Both methods result in a separation of oil and water phases.
