Abstract
1435603 Recording and playback systems BATTELLE DEVELOPMENT CORP 3 April 1973 15988/73 Heading G4M The Specification describes the recording and playback system of Specification 1,302,368 and the photographic record of Specification 1,302,369 and describes a further means of synchronizing during read-out to ensure that the words read out contain the bits in the same locations as the words recorded. Data may be stored in lines on a document which is scanned by the reader. The first bit on each line is arranged to be a "1" and is used after detection of the retrace period of the scanner to resynchronize a clock oscillator and a word sync. counter (Fig. 7, not shown). Alternatively a special word, e.g. all "1's" may be periodically added to the data and recognized to reset a word sync. counter to zero. Or a specific bit position in a word may contain a specific value and that location in each word is sampled for the value. If the sampled value is incorrect a clock pulse to the word sync. counter enabling the sampling operation is inhibited to sample the next bit until the correct value is found. Alternatively the rates of change of two adjacent bits may be determined and compared to inhibit a clock pulse if an incorrect value is obtained. An analog input signal may carry a signal of a given frequency which is filtered out and digitized. If incorrect sync. is obtained the frequency value will be a factor of 2<SP>n</SP> wrong and the sync counter is altered to produce the correct value. The rate of change of particular bits may be monitored. The bits may change randomly or one may be changed at a predetermined rate. Parity of the words may be changed and a repeated parity error may indicate incorrect sync. Sync. spots of specific shapes may be arranged on the record to be detected through appropriate masks or sync. marks may be in a separate track or at different depths on a multi layer recording or of different colours to data markings.
