Abstract

1435540 Curing epoxy resins; modified phenolic resins McCALL CORP 28 June 1973 [6 July 1972 1 June 1973] 30848/73 Headings C3B and C3R [Also in Divisions B1 and C2] Curable solventless compositions comprise a polyepoxide, a polyhydric phenol hardening agent and a catalyst which is the product of a separate reaction between a chelate of a multivalent metal or boron and a dihydric phenol (other than those having two hydroxy groups on a single aromatic ring) or a polyhydric phenol-novolac resin, wherein at least one chelate group is reacted with at least one hydroxyl group of the phenol or phenolic resin. Suitably, the compositions are ink compositions further containing a pigment and curable in from 0À3 to 30 sees. on application to a surface and exposure to a temperature of 250-400‹ F. The polyhydric phenol hardening agent may be the same as the phenolic component of the catalyst, e.g. bisphenol-A or 2,6-dimethylol- 4-hydrocarbylphenols and their condensation products. The chelate component is suitably an ester of a beta-keto acid, a beta-diketone, o-hydroxyphenol carbonyl compound or an amide of a beta-diketone with boron or Zn, Fe, Al, Ti, Sn or Cr. The acetyl acetonates of Zn, Fe, Al, Ti or Sn are most suitable. Many suitable polyepoxide components and pigments are specified and the compositions may also contain mineral fillers, conventional rub compounds and ultraviolet absorbers. Suitably the inks contain 40-95% polyepoxide monomer, 1-50% hardening agent, 5-20% diluent, 5-25% pigment, 1-10% rub compounds and 2-15% catalyst. The examples describe ink compositions using catalysts which are the reaction products of aluminium acetyl acetonates with a phenolic resin or bisphenol-A and containing (i) 3,4-epoxycyclohexyl - methyl - 3,4 - epoxycyclohexane carboxylate or (ii) diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A as epoxide, (i) a condensation polymer of 2,6- dimethyl-4-butyl phenol or an aromatic glycidyl ester or (ii) bisphenol-A as hardening agent, and various pigments, hardening agents and rub compounds.
