Abstract

1435473 Accumulators REFRIGERATION RESEARCH 23 Sept 1974 [1 Nov 1973] 41265/74 Heading F4H A suction accumulator, for use intermediate the evaporator and compressor in a vapourcompression refrigeration system, comprises a closed casing 12 having an inlet tube 38 and an outlet 20, and an outlet tube structure in the form of an outer tube 26 and an inner tube 22. The inner tube 22, which may be welded to the tube 26 is in direct communication with the outlet 20 at one of its ends, and is open at the other 24. The end 24 is biased as shown. The tube 26 surrounds the tube 22, is open at one end 42 and includes an aperture 32 in a recess 34 at the other. In use of the accumulator, refrigerant gas along with liquid particles of refrigerant and oil enters via the tube 38 and is directed tangentially around the casing 12 by a baffle 40. The gas enters the outlet tube structure at 42, passes downwardly to and then through the opening 24 and upwardly out of the outlet 20. Liquid refrigerant and lubricating oil collects in the bottom of the casing 12 and is drawn through the opening 32 by refrigerant gas, into and through the inner tube 22. The opening 32 thereby meters the flow of liquid into the compressor at a controlled rate. The opening 32 may be #th inch in diameter and may include a filter 34. A small opening 36 is provided adjacent the upper end of the inner tube 22 to equalize the pressure within the tubes 22, 26.
