Abstract
1435420 Fuel cell MINNESOTA MINING & MFG CO 3 April 1974 [4 April 1973] 14881/74 Heading H1B A fuel cell comprises porous electrodes 11, 12 spaced by a porous, gas-impermeable, ionpermeable matrix member 13, a container 14 for electrolyte 15 which is wicked up into the matrix member, and current collector plates 16, 18. These components are held together under pressure within a plastics case 10 to which gaseous fuel and oxidant are supplied to openings 21. The matrix member 13 consists essentially of a self-supporting compressible fibrous mat of randomly dispersed and entangled microfibres of a thermoplastic polymer, e.g. polyarylsulphone, polysulphone, polyethersulphone or polyphenylene sulphide. The micro-fibres may have diameters between 0À01 and 20 microns, the product being obtained by using methods described in Specification 1,122,192 and U.S. Specification 2,571,457. The electrodes 11, 12 and collector plates 16, 18 may be of graphite and the electrodes additionally contain a catalyst, e.g. a platinum metal, iron, nickel or spinels. The electrolyte 15 may be phosphoric acid, the fuel hydrogen, and the oxidant oxygen or chlorine.
