Abstract
1435365 Automatic control of gain CROSFIELD ELECTRONICS Ltd 6 Sept 1974 [13 Sept 1973] 43128/73 Heading G3R In a system for engraving gravure surfaces using a modulated laser beam, the effect of the beam due to a given modulating signal (i.e. the gain of the system) is kept constant by adjusting this quantity in response to the difference between the measured effect of a test signal and a reference value. The surface may comprise a metal workpiece in which are pre-etched cells filled with a material more easily decomposed or evaporated by the laser. As shown, laser 10 is modulated by picture signals from a scanner 14 whose operation is synchronized with the rotation of a gravure drum 12. Periodically e.g. once per revolution, an electronic switch 16 substitutes a ramp test signal from 22, the ramp being such as to embrace the signal strength necessary to initiate engraving. Onset of engraving is detected photo-electrically by 26 whose output opens a gate 28 for clockpulses from a generator 24 to a counter 30. The gate is closed at the end of the test signal and thus the number of gated pulses corresponds to the instant ( and hence the signal strength) that engraving started. If this differs from a number pre-set in the counter a D to A converter adjusts the gain of an amplifier 18 by an appropriate amount. The test band sensor may detect the difference in reflection from a lamp due to the onset of engraving Figs. 5 or 6, (not shown), or the resultant scattering of the laser itself. The sensor may detect and average the test bands produced during several preceding revolutions, or the current one only. It is mentioned that the surface may be a flat stationary one and that the depth of engraving due to a constant test signal may be measured instead of the time/ramp arrangement described.
