Abstract

1435059 Telegraphy; isolating devices; photo isolating circuits ITT CREED Ltd 21 March 1974 12539/74 Heading H3T An arrangement for electrically isolating telegraph apparatus, from a line, line signals are fed through a subtractor to a first isolating non- linear coupler providing an input to a high gain amplifier driving in turn a second coupler the output from which source is applied to the subtractor. The amplifier gain is arranged so that output current is substantially linearly related to line current. In a block diagram (Fig. 1, not shown) line currents are led through subtractor (2) and through square root circuit (4) to amplifier (5) supplying current to utilizing device (6), i.e. tape punch, teleprinter &c. and thence through another square root circuit (3) similar to (4) to a second input of subtracter (2). In a practical arrangement line currents pass through a resistor RT, considered as a subtractor, to light emitting element DF forming part of coupler 4, together with sensitive element PF supplied from source 7 and controlling amplifier 5 which feeds device 6 and thence to a second light emitting element 3 forming with sensitive element PB the second non-linear coupler, output from which is fed back to input point J. In this arrangement line current supplies power for operating DF, PB but in an alternative arrangement (Fig. 3, not shown) a separate isolated supply (9) is led to DP through transistor (8) amplifying line current. Supply (9) may be of any type, e.g. transformer/rectifier, battery, or set of photo voltaic cells.
