Abstract

1434968 Synthetic tanning agents BASF AG 6 Dec 1973 [8 Dec 1972] 56620/73 Heading C3R A light-fast condensation product for use as a tanning agent is prepared by reacting a sulphonated aromatic compound, which is a mixture which per mole consists of 0À2-0À6 moles of naphthalenesulphonic acid and 0À8-0À4 moles of a phenolsulphonic acid, with a nitrogenous organic compound having a nitrogen atom attached to a carbon atom which is in turn attached by a double bond to an oxygen atom or another nitrogen atom, e.g. urea, guanidine, dicyandiamide or melamine or their C 1 -C 5 alkyl substituted derivatives, and formaldehyde or a formaldehyde donor, and further reacting the resultant condensate with a phenol and optionally formaldehyde, or with a phenol and a condensation product of a phenol and formaldehyde, there being used from 1-1À5 moles of nitrogenous compound and from 1À7 to 2À2 moles of formaldehyde or formaldehyde donor in the first stage per mole of sulphonated aromatic compound. Suitable phenols for use in the further reaction stage are phenol itself, 4,4<SP>1</SP>- dioxydiphenylpropane and 4,4<SP>1</SP>-dioxydiphenylsulphone. In the examples tanning agents are prepared by reacting sulphuric acid first with naphthalene and then with phenol and reacting the resultant product with urea and aqueous formaldehyde. The resultant condensate is further reacted with either (1) phenol and formaldehyde; or (2) phenol and a dioxydiphenylsulphone/HCHO condensate; or (3) dioxydiphenylpropane.
