Abstract

1434811 Driving gear; rotary engines; reciprocating compressors MOTOREN-FORSCHUNGS GmbH & CO KG FRANKE-MOTOREN 8 June 1973 [8 June 1972] 27489/73 Headings F1B, F1M and FIN A machine e.g. an I.C. engine, compressor or steam engine, comprises a cylinder with a piston movable therein connected through a block and slot guide to a drive-shaft, the slot guide being variable in inclination relative to the direction of piston movement to alter the piston stroke and displace the dead centre of its stroke. In an opposed piston engine an element 18, Fig. 1, can be angularly adjusted in a connecting device 16 by setting means 20 which may be a gearing arrangement, a worm drive, a cone-pulley arrangement, a hydraulic positioner or an electromagnetic actuator. In another embodiment a cylinder is rotatable in a sleeve 31, Fig. 5 mounted on a hollow shaft 28, 29 in members (41, 42), Fig. 3 (not shown), which support, on bearings (44, 45), discs (46, 47) which have slot guides 96, Fig. 6. Blocks 117 slide in the slot guides and control guide discs 125 which have guide rods 49 fixed thereto which penetrate the cylinder and carry a piston 107 for rotational movement with the guide disc 125. The latter have slots 54 which receive the shaft 28, 29. The angular relationship between the guide discs 125 and the blocks 117 is variable by axial movement of a setting ring 129 which engages slots in both members by means of inwardly-directed keys, the inner keys which engage the guide disc being angularly arranged with respect to the outer key which engages the block 117. In another embodiment a slot guide 82, Fig. 8, is supported by springs 85, 86 in the inclined position so that its inclination is automatically varied by the pressure acting on the piston, e.g. arising on starting, to alter the piston stroke and displace its dead centre position. In another embodiment a slot guide arranged in a piston and guided in a disc arranged in a recess has setting means in the piston which maintain the slot guide in an inclined position for limited adjustment.
