Abstract

1434721 Testing spark gaps R W D MACDONALD 16 April 1973 [14 Jan 1972] 1805/72 Heading G1U Spark voltage is measured by connecting a measuring capacitor to the generating system such that the spark power generates a voltage on the capacitor, the peak value of which is measured. In Fig. 1 (not shown) a standard gap is connected to a high voltage line and to earth via a measuring capacitor. When the spark occurs, the breakdown voltage is applied to the capacitor. In Fig. 2 (not shown), a pair of capacitors is connected in parallel with the spark gap, the "earthy" capacitor having a diode across it. At the breakdown of the gap, the "earthy" capacitor receives a charge proportional to the breakdown voltage. For testing I.C. engine ignition systems, the circuit of Fig. 1, in unit 5 calibrates the system with the switches SW1, SW2 in position 1, using the standard gap in switch SW2. With the switches in position 3, the unit 6, (the circuit of Fig. 2) measures the breakdown of spark-plug. In position 2, the extended gap in SW2 allows any insulation breakdown to be detected. Peak voltage indication may be by a chain of neons across a ladder of resistors in parallel to the measuring capacitor, Fig. 6, (not shown) or by using the capacitor voltage to control the current through a Darlington pair Figs. 3, 4 (not shown).
