Abstract
1434555 Boiler in combination with direct heat/electricity conversion means GULF OIL CORP 23 July 1973 [6 Feb 1973] 35034/73 Heading F4A [Also in Division B1] A boiler assembly 50 produces a superheated vapour F which passes via pipes 118, 120 through a number of condenser loops 101 in heat exchange relationship with modules 122 for conversion of the heat of the vapour into electrical energy. Heat dissipating fins are provided for each module and the condensed vapour is returned to the boiler. As shown the boiler heat source is a catalytic burner 30 which directs gas into a mixing chamber 87 defined by porous walls 80, 82 the outer of which carries a catalyst to effect combustion in chamber 70. In other embodiments the burner may be a catalytic liquid fueled burner (Fig. 5, not shown) or a solid fuel burner (Fig. 4, not shown). Fig. 8 shows a reflux boiler in which a heater of any suitable type is placed in a chamber 255 to heat fluid in a surrounding annular chamber. Vapour passes to condensers 243 to heat converter modules 245 and condensed fluid is heated by the oppositely flowing vapour as it returns. A burner for this embodiment using the catalylic combustion of gas is disclosed (Fig. 9, not shown). All components of the burners are designed to be readily replaceable.
