Abstract

1434522 Ink-drop printers INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 6 Aug 1974 [17 Aug 1973] 34475/74 Addition to 1417919 Heading G4H In an ink jet printer, electrical signals are electrostatically induced in a sensor device by passage of a stream of charged ink drops, the sensor device including two conductive elements exposed towards the path of the stream and surrounded by a grounded outer conductive element. The said two conductive elements are connected to respective inputs of an FET operational amplifier which is A.C. coupled to another amplifier which feeds a strobed threshold device the output of which may control synchronization of drop formation with drop charging. The sensor device may consist of a laminated structure of conductive layers interleaved with insulating layers, the conductive layers being an innermost layer forming one of the said two conductive elements, two outermost layers forming the grounded outer conductive element, and two intermediate layers between the innermost and outermost layers forming the second of the said two conductive elements, the ink drop stream passing through a hole in the laminate perpendicular to the layers. A second construction has cylindrical layers, the innermost being a hollow or solid cylindrical rod, this sensor being of the probe type. A third construction is of the probe type, being formed as a planar structure on a substrate. Sensors as above may be used to measure ink stream velocity, to verify and control correct deflection, or to detect stream failure (the unused drops being slightly charged to permit this).
