Abstract

1434124 Polyamide-bound pigments; luminescent compositions DAY-GLO COLOR CORP 16 May 1973 [17 May 1972] 23370/73 Addition to 1383051 Headings C4A and C4S [Also in Division C3] A pigment comprises a colouring material and a linear polyamide carrier having at least one free carboxy group on the majority of the molecules formed as the condensation product of (a) an aliphatic or alicyclic polyfunctional primary amine or a heterocyclic secondary diamine, (b) a monoamine, (c) a polybasic aromatic acid with carboxy groups on non-contiguous carbon atoms and (d) a dicarboxylic acid different from (c) in a molar ratio a : b : d : c of from 10 : 1 : 1 : 10 to 1: 1 : 1 : 1 such that the molecular weight is from 400 to 2500. The invention is a modification of that of Specification 1,383,051 relating to such pigments wherein the polyamide is derived from (a) and (c) in a ratio a : c between 1 : 1 and 1 : 2 and in embodiments of which either (i) a monocarboxylic acid or (ii) a heterocyclic secondary monoamine and an equivalent additional amount of (c) is used as chain terminator. In the present modification (b) is preferably cyclohexylamine and (d) may be adipic, glutaric, maleic or succinic acid. Other aspects, embodiments and applications of the invention such as preferred components (a) and (c), colouring materials, preferred stabilizers and compositions which may be pigmented are as in the parent Specification. A fluorescent dye is preferably 0À01 to 5% by wt. of the polyamide carrier. The product may be reduced to sub-micron to 20 Á diameter particles.
