Abstract

1433709 Grinding K CHIJIIWA 16 Sept 1974 [17 Sept 1973] 40299/74 Heading B3D An apparatus for automatically removing flashings 3 from castings or other workpieces W comprises a hone 1, first air spring means A arranged to resist a first component FN in a direction normal to the hone grinding surface of a force produced during grinding, second air spring means B arranged to resist a second component FT in a direction tangential to the hone grinding surface of the force, means for supplying both air spring means with air under a pressure set in response to a characteristic of a flashing of the workpiece, first and second differential transformers C, D for converting displacements of the first and second air spring means to first and second electric signals, respectively, and first and second motors M1, M4 for controlling movement of the workpiece in the directions of the first and second components in response to the first and second signals, respectively. The hone 1 is carried by a stand 16 and rotated by a belt drive from a motor M5 on a supporting stand 2. The air spring means A, in the form of a bellows, and the differential transformer C are disposed between the stands 2, 16, a further bellows A<SP>1</SP> supplied with air at a pressure equal to or less than that supplied to the bellows A acts as a stabilizer. The stand 2 projects from a plate 13 having nuts 14 engaged by a screw 12 rotatable in a pillar 11 by a motor M3 to vertically adjust the hone. The pillar is carried by a stand 30 pivotally adjustable by a vertical stub spindle 42 on a stand 10 on a base 7. The workpiece W is carried by a stand 4 rotatable on a stand 5 by a motor M4. The stand 5 is movable on a stand 6 by a screw rod 9 driven by a motor M2 in a Y direction, the stand 6 being movable on the base 7 in an X direction by a screw rod 8 driven by motor M1. The hone is carried by a shaft 32 supported for rotation in bearings 20, 21 in pressure plates 18, 19 and for axial movement in bearings 22, 23 in a barrel 24. The pressure plates are slidable in the barrel in response to air pressure supplied to the second air spring means B, in the form of a bellows, acting on plate 18 against pressure supplied to a second bellows B<SP>1</SP> acting on plate 19. A lever 27 extends from plate 18 and contacts the core 37 of the differential transformer D. The air pressure supplied to bellows A is determined by feeding the workpiece towards the hone, without rotation of the workpiece, by drive of the motor M1 until the flashing at the point engaging the hone is ground away, the grinding force being the component F N , such force determining the air pressure which is set by a valve, and the core of the differential transformer C is set to neutral. The workpiece is then rotated to set the air pressure to bellows B to determine the component of force F T . The air pressure to bellows A<SP>1</SP>, B<SP>1</SP> is then set to be equal or less than that set for bellows A, B, respectively.
