1433702 Finishing fabrics E I ARONOFF 9 July 1974 [5 Dec 1973] 30393/74 Heading D1S Apparatus for spreading a tubular knitted fabric, e.g. for untwisting fabric in rope form after scouring, comprises two pairs of opposed driven rollers 24a, 24b, 26a, 26b spaced apart in a common plane, a pair of rings 20, 22 between the driven rollers in the plane, brackets 51a, 51b holding the rings 20, 22 against the driven rollers and including idler wheels 50a, 52a, 50b, 52b which allow the rings 20, 22 to rotate about their centres 68a; 68b upon rotation of the driven rollers, each ring 20 or 22 including a leading arm 63a, or 63b and trailing arm 62a or 62b extending therefrom and adapted to pivot in the plane about the centre 68a or 68b and engage the inner surface of the fabric F. As shown, the rollers 24a, 24b, 26a, 26b are mounted on stub shafts 28a, 28b, 30a, 30b journalled within gear boxes 32, 34 mounted to slide on rods 38, 40. Rotation of a double screw member 42 by a handwheel 48 adjusts the distance between the gear boxes 32, 34 for different width fabric tubes F. The brackets 51a, 51b are provided with adjustment screws 53a, 53b. The idler wheels of each bracket, e.g. the wheels 50a, 52a, Fig. 5, engage flat faces 54a, 56a, of the V-shaped inner surface of the respective ring 20. The arms 62a, 63a and 62b, 63b are pivoted about stub shafts 68a, 68b on diametrical hubs 58, 60 on each ring 20, 22. idler wheels 70a, 70b, 72a, 72b are mounted on the arms 63a, 63b, 62a, 62b, respectively. After the fabric F passing from a container 18 has been spread and untwisted, it passes between a squeeze roll assembly 16 comprising a roller 78 and a roller 86 mounted between pivoting brackets 80b pivotable by a piston- and-cylinder arrangement 82b.
