Abstract
1433265 Boring earth &c I J McCULLOUGH 31 Oct 1973 50569/73 Heading E1F Logging-while-drilling apparatus includes an electric cable 40 extending down through the drill string, the cable being in electrical contact at its lower end with a probe 61 positioned adjacent the drill bit 16 and being connected above ground to signal receiving and recording equipment 45. The cable enters the string through a swivel 25, a pack-off unit 52 being provided to seal against loss of drilling fluid, to prevent the cable rotating, and to ensure the cable advances with the string as the bit advances into the earth. In the embodiment shown, the cable is fixed to the probe 61 which is rotatably received in a socket 60 in the drilling bit. The probe may include down-the-hole equipment (82), Fig. 2 (not shown), such as an amplifier, and insulation (85), e.g. aluminium oxide, is provided at the lower end of the string and between the bit and string to ensure that signals from the formation are received principally from the bottom face of the well and are not affected by the drilling fluid. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown), the probe (96) is completely insulated from the string (18) and drill bit (116), it rotates with the string and bit, it has its own drillbit portion (102) disposed centrally of the main bit (116), and is electrically connected to the stationary cable via a rotary coupling (126, 128). The probe drill-bit portion may be hollow (Fig. 5 not shown) to obtain core samples.
