Abstract

1433240 Modulating light RCA CORPORATION 29 Aug 1973 [5 Sept 1972 (2)] 40591/73 Heading H4F A cell comprising spaced substrates 12, 14 hermetically sealed at 20, in which one substrate is provided with at least one hole 34 for filling the cell with liquid crystal material 18, is sealed by introducing a particle of malleable material into the hole and thereafter shaping the particle to conform (as at 36) with the peripheral surface of the hole. The particle may be a lead sphere, or a lead disc stamped from an overlying sheet, which is shaped by swaging with a rod having a domed end, the rod being twisted as it is driven down on to the particle. The rod may act as the punch for producing the lead disc. Other suitable materials are copper, gold, indium, alloys thereof, and amalgams, e.g. of silver. As particularly described, the cell is an electro-optic display cell, having electrodes 24, 28 and a further hole 34 is provided in substrate 12 whereby suction may be applied to draw material 18 into the cell.
