Abstract

1433234 Enamel composition IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd and T I DOMESTIC APPLIANCES Ltd 4 March 1974 [26 March 1973] 14342/73 Heading C1M A coating composition (e.g. for application to an internal surface of an oven to form a selfcleaning coating) comprises a milled "selfmatting" (devitrifiable) enamel frit, antimony trioxide or a precursor thereof which gives Sb 2 O 3 on heating (e.g. ammonium antimonite or antimonate, or antimony tartrate) and water containing less than 0À08% by weight of chloride ions. Preferably the antimony oxide or its precursor is present in an amount up to 15% by weight of the frit. An oxidation catalyst (e.g. one or more of the oxides of Cu, Mn or Co) may be present up to 50% by weight of the frit. Preferably the frit, antimony compound and catalyst (if any) are made into an aqueous slip with water containing less than 0À08% by weight of chloride ions, and applied to a metal (e.g. steel) and fired at 800-850‹ C. so that the frit undergoes devitrification to give a porous matrix having a matt or semi-matt finish. The slip, which may comprise 50-90% by weight, is preferably aged for at least 24 hours. The slip may also contain clay. The steel is preferably first degreased (e.g. with trichloroethylene vapour) etched with acid (e.g. 3-4% sulphuric acid) subjected to Nickel deposition (e.g. using 11 g./l. NiSO 4 solution at 70-75‹ C. and neutralized (e.g. using a mixed borax/sodium carbonate solution). The coating produced may have a thickness of 0À012-0À035 cm., and may be porous. The frit may be as described in Specification 1,362,948.
