Abstract

1432996 Introducing toroidal members into tyres BOUSSOIS SA 10 May 1973 [25 May 1972 22 March 1973] 22459/73 Heading B7C A method, illustrated with the aid of Fig. 1, of introducing a toroidal member containing air into a tyre, comprises: deforming the member such that opposite radially inner faces of the member are brought into close proximity, or into contact, so as to elongate the member; thrusting the elongated member into the tyre in a direction parallel to the direction of the elongation; the member being inserted through an opening in one face of the tyre and at an oblique angle to the mid-circumferential plane of the tyre; preventing the member from escaping from the opening of the other face of the tyre while guiding the member towards the internal periphery of the tyre; and continuing to thrust the member into the tyre until it is finally positioned inside the tyre. The method is applicable to the insertion of conventional, hollow, inner tubes into tyres, but is stated to be particularly suitable to the insertion of a "puncture-proof" inner tube formed of moulded rubber having a large number of compartments which are inflated during manufacture to a predetermined pressure. In a first embodiment, Fig. 2, of device for carrying out the method, the inner tube 1 is deformed in operation of the device, by a jack 9 until opposite radially inner faces of the inner tube are brought into contact and the inner tube is secured in the deformed condition by means of ties (24), Fig. 3 (not shown). The inner tube is then engaged in an oval-section guide tube 14 and the ties removed. A funnel 15 comprising separable elements (15a, 15b, 15c), Fig. 3 (not shown), is then attached to the guide tube 14. The funnel 15 has a flange 17 engaging within a tyre opening. A jack 12 is then actuated to thrust the inner tube through the funnel 15 and into the tyre. A deflector 5 engaged on the tyre guides the inner tube into the inner periphery of the tyre. In a second embodiment, Fig. 6, of the device, the funnel 31 comprises two half-shells 32 pivotally mounted on the guide tube 14. The half-shells 32 have flanges 35 for engagement in a tyre opening. In use of the device of Fig. 6, the undeformed inner tube 1 is placed between wings 26 and pushed into the guide tube 14 by a jack 12. In a third embodiment, Fig. 11, of the device, the inner tube 1 is deformed between a fixed side-plate 37 and a movable side-plate 38.
