Abstract
143,281. Bourguignon, L. Aug. 12, 1918. Projectiles; fuses. - Relates to message-carrying projectiles, and consists in combinations of parts intended mainly to prevent the projectile from burying itself in the ground. The message-carrier 3 and a plug 4 are fitted into the base of the shall 1 either friction-tight or by shallow screw-threads easily stripped. The carrier 3 is attached by a chain and an elastic washer or by a flexible connexion 20 to a Bengal light or fume-producing body 19 protected by a wad 18 from an explosive charge 17 adapted to be fired by an adjustable time-fuse 11 ignited by a primer 18 struck by an inertia pellet 6 at the moment of discharge from a gun. The explosion expels the message-carrier and the Bengal light rearwards from the shell and counteracts their forward velocity. The Bengal light is set alight by a fuse 21 ignited by the explosion. In a modification, the message-carrier is attached directly to the Bengal light, and the explosive charge is fired by a percussion fuse on impact with the target. In another modification, the message-carrier is constituted by a tubular tail provided with vanes, the explosive charge is fired by a longitudinal time-fuse, and the explosion gases escape through forward holes in the shell to check its speed. In still another modification, the explosive charge is arranged between the message-carrier and the Bengal lights, and these are not ejected by the explosion, but only distended to open the Bengal light to the air and cause the projectile to turn over and lose its speed by the shifting of the centre of gravity.
