Abstract

1432618 Filled polyurethane foams E L CLAY and J L BAKER 18 April 1973 [24 April 1972 2 April 1973] 18670/73 Heading C3R Filled polyurethane foams comprising a shell of relatively higher density extending inwardly from the surface or surfaces thereof and an internal core of relatively lower density are prepared by foaming within a closed mould a composition comprising (a) a polyurethane foam precursor, including a blowing agent, (b) a particulate filler uniformly distributed in the precursor and in a weight ratio thereto of at least 1 : 3, the majority of particles of filler being at least 10 microns in size; and (c) a density distribution control agent which is an organic liquid of b.p. at least 40‹ C., which is substantially inert toward the foaming reaction and which dissolves in the precursor to reduce the viscosity thereof. The mould may be provided with a pressure barrier member therein to cause the generation of an internal, densified region in the resultant moulded product at the barrier during foam formation. Suitable fillers are fly ash, glass compositions, calcium carbonate, silicon dioxide, iron oxides, feldspar, dolomite, barite and anhydrite. The density distribution control agent is preferably a halocarbon, e.g. carbon tetrachloride, trichloroethylene, methylene chloride, chloroform, methyl chloroform and perchloroethylene. The sandwich-type products may be used for structural applications, decorative wall panels and non- structural furniture parts.
