Abstract

1432199 Transistor switching circuits PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd 17 Dec 1973 [20 Dec 1972 13 Aug 1973] 58379/73 Heading H3T A switching circuit has a switching signal 5 supplied to the base of a switching transistor TR1 via an amplifier TR2 having a current sensing impedance R connected between the amplifier output and the base of the switching transistor TR1 and the amplifier TR2 is included within a negative feedback loop in which a feedback signal is derived from the collector of a feedback transistor TR3 the base-emitter of which is so connected across the current sensing impedance R that the base current of the switching transistor TR1 forward biases the base-emitter junction of the feedback transistor TR3. The negative feedback loop is operative such that when the temperature of the circuit is increased from a low temperature (50‹ C. below a nominal temperature) to a nominal temperature the base drive current to TR1 is reduced, in view of the higher current gain of the transistor TR1 at the nominal temperature as compared to that at the lower temperature, but is sufficient to ensure saturation of the transistor TR1 with a power dissipation less than that occurring in a known circuit (Fig. 1, not shown) where excessive power dissipation at high temperatures is most troublesome particularly if the circuit arrangement forms part of an integrated circuit assembly. The reduction of base drive current as the temperature increases occurs due to reduction in the base-emitter junction voltage of the transistor TR3 to which the voltage drop across the resistance R is matched by the feedback arrangement. Due to this matching the current applied to the base of TR1 is largely independent of supply voltage variations or variations in the signal source magnitude 5. A bleeder resistor may be connected to the base electrode of the switching transistor TR1 to accommodate reverse base currents whilst switching from the conductive to the non-conductive state.
