Abstract

1431898 Obtaining aluminium from dross ELECTRICITY COUNCIL 30 July 1973 [7 Aug 1972] 36825/72 Heading C7D Aluminium is recovered from aluminium-bearing drosses which have first been mechanically beneficiated by a process which comprises melting a heel of aluminium in a coreless induction furnace, feeding the aluminium-bearing dross into the furnace, adding a flux and removing aluminium which accumulates below the level of non-metallic material floating on the surface of the melt. The process may be continuous, with excess dross being periodically withdrawn and aluminium also being drawn off. In non-continuous processes, the inductive stirring effect causes the non-metallics to adhere to the furnace walls from where they are removed by scraping. In a tilting furnace the dross can be removed by a rake and the aluminium then poured out by further tilting. Ferromagnetic materials should be separated magnetically prior to treatment of the aluminium dross.
