Abstract

1431689 Steering knuckles DAYTONWALTER CORP 26 Sept 1973 [13 Oct 1972] 45160/73 Heading B7H [Also in Division B3] A vehicle steering knuckle assembly comprises a cast ductile iron base member 12 having a projecting steering knuckle 16, an upper ball-joint opening 18 in the steering knuckle 16, a spindle opening 20 in the base member 12 having an axis disposed in angular intersecting relationship with the axis of the opening 18, a forged spindle member 14 with an integral lower knuckle 38 and a case-hardened ground and polished spindle 36 shrink-fitted into the opening 20. Formed integrally with the base member 12 are brake rails 22, 24 which are machined to final configuration, a steering arm 26 in which is drilled an opening 28, and bores 30 in which are drilled dust shield mounting holes. An upper ball-joint opening 52 aligned with the opening 18 is drilled in the knuckle 38. A tapped hole 34 is formed in the base member 12 for receiving a steering stop.
