Abstract
1431583 Coated sheet material ILFORD LTD 28 June 1974 [29 June 1973] 31122/73 Addition to 1391650 Heading B2E [Also in Division G2] A film base material is obtained by coating one side of a film of synthetic linear polyester of highly hydrophobic character to a corona discharge to render this side capable of accepting an adherent layer and coating the treated side with an organic solvent solution of a phenoxy resin which has been partially esterified. The base film materials are able to accept phenoxy resin having the general formula wherein each of R 1 -R 7 is a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl or cyclohexyl group, R 8 is a hydrogen atom or represents the acyl residue of either a partial ester of an organic dicarboxylic acid or a partial ester of trimellitic acid, n is at least 50 and from 10 to 95% of the R 8 groups are a said acyl residue. A lower alkyl group is an alkyl group containing 1-6 carbon atoms. Preferably n is 100 and it is preferred that the compound is 20-65% esterifled. The base film aterials are able to accept a hydrophilic layer such as a layer of gelatin, polyvinyl alcohol or polyvinyl acetal. The gelatin layer may be a gelatino silver halide emulsion layer, but normally an intermediate gelatin-synthetic polymer layer is provided between the partial ester phenoxy resin layer and the gelatino silver halide emulsion layer. The hydrophilic layer may comprise a light-sensitive diazonium salt to produce a diazotype material. Alternatively, after a polyvinyl alcohol or polyvinyl acetal layer has been coated on to the film base material as prepared, the polyvinyl alcohol or polyvinyl acetal may be surface hydrolysed and impregnated or coated with a light-sensitive diazonium salt. A suitable base material is a biaxailly oriented film of polyethylene terephthalate.
