Abstract
1431497 Welding by pressure; making supports for elongate members STICHTING REACTOR CENTRUM NEDERLAND 12 June 1973 [12 June 1972] 27879/73 Headings B3A and B3R [Also in Divisions D1-D2 F3- F4 and G4-G6] A spacer grid for supporting a group of elongated heat exchange members such as a nuclear fuel assembly comprises a plurality of parallel straps 20 interconnected at regular intervals by partitions 11 positioned perpendicular to the straps 20 and furnished with pairs of lip portions 12, 13 which pass through apertures (21, 22, Fig. 4, not shown) in the straps 20. The partitions 11 are also furnished with pairs of tab portions 14, 15 bent to extend perpendicular to the lip portions 12, 13. The lip portions 12, 13 are spot-welded to the opposing ends of adjacent partitions 11, as at 28, and the tab portions 14, 15 are spotwelded to adjacent straps 20, as at 29. As is clear from Fig. 3, the tongues 12, 13 are displaced parallel to the body of the partition 11 by a distance equal to the thickness of the partition. Partitions 23 having only bent tab portions are provided between the two uppermost straps 20, 27 (strap 27 not being apertured) and also in place of the lowermost strap 20 (as shown in Fig. 8). The fuel rods of the nuclear fuel assembly are supported within the grid cells between springs and fixed supports, which latter are either spot-welded to, or punched and bent out of, the cell walls (Figs. 9, 11, not shown). Where in the assembly of the lattice a spotweld is required between two walls 46, 47 (Fig. 17) of materials which are not easily welded together, use is made of a welding cap 45 the recessed portion 48 of which extends through an aperture 51 in the wall 46 of a material that is hard to weld. The material of the cap 45 is of such a nature as to be highly weldable to the wall 47. Application of electrodes 49, 50 produces a welded joint between the portion 48 of cap 45 and the wall 47, so that the projecting edge or flange 52 of cap 45 presses the wall 48 against the wall 47. The flange 52 is accommodated in a recess in the face of the wall 46.
