Abstract

1431308 Bicycles ORIGINAL PLASTIC BIKE Inc 25 June 1973 [29 Dec 1972] 29965/73 Heading B7E A bicycle frame moulded from plastics and having a hard exterior skin with a structural foam interior consists of top and front struts 10, 12 having the cross-section of Fig. 2, a diagonal post 22 having the cross-section of fig. 3 and a pair each of back and bottom braces 18, 20 having the cross-section of Fig. 4, the members of the frame forming fillets 13, 44, 62, 60, 46, 52, 53 and 72 where they connect and webs 48 and 54 between the pairs of braces. There is provided a saddle post 25, rear wheel slots 72, a head tube 14 and crank axle housing 24 as part of the frame. The crank axle housing is formed with longitudinal corrugations on its interior surface and locates a crank axle 160 rotatable in bearings 146, 166. A bearing cup 140 and bearing housing 150 are retained in the housing 24 by ultrasonically melting part of the outer skin of the frame and forcing it into cannelures 144 and 154 where it sets. A nipple 168 threadedly engages housing 180 and is retained by nut 174. In the head tube 14 is located front fork sleeve 92 rotatable by bearings 88 secured between faces 86 of a bearing sleeve 82 and either race ring 96 or 112. A ferrule 104 is screw-threaded into race ring 112 and locked by a nut 120. A cap 126 has a square lug 128 which fits in a corresponding hole in the top of the ferrule, and is rigid with the handle-bars through ribs 123 to transmit torque to the front wheel. A bolt 130 extends through a hole in cap 126 and is threaded to bushing 132 to bear the stress exerted tending to separate the fork sleeve 92 and head tube 14.
