Abstract

1431234 Selective printing NCR CORP 22 April 1974 [25 April 1973 26 April 1973 15 March 1974] 17484/74 Heading B6F A data processing apparatus comprises a typewriter 10 having a print head 18 arranged to print on a sheet 27, a carriage 16 for transporting the print head along a print line, and sensing means 22 for reading data on a sheet (28, Fig. 2, not shown) which replaces the sheet 27, the sensing means being arranged to be carried by the carriage 16 when reading data, and the print head being rendered inoperative when the sensing means is operative. The typewriter may include a fixed support 70, the print head 18 and sensing means 22 being interchangeably mountable on the carriage. A switch on the support 70 is operated when the sensing means is mounted thereon to render the print head operative. Alternatively a support (88, Fig. 9, not shown) may be provided for the sensing means (89) which is attachable to the carriage 16 when the sensing means is to be operative, such attachment rendering the print head inoperative. In a further alternative, the sensing means and print head are mounted on the same carriage, the sensing means being slidable between operative and inoperative positions.
