Abstract

1430970 Automatic control of position INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP 12 July 1973 [16 Aug 1972] 33256/73 Heading G3R To control the position of a magnetic transducer head relative to a data track of a moving record carrier, a magnetic servo head senses the positions of a pair of servo tracks associated with the data track to give a signal, which is phase shifted as a function of the deviation of the servo head from a desired central position between the servo tracks, to provide a position control signal for the servo head. As shown, the signal from the servo head is phase shifted in phase-locked oscillators 2, 3 whose output pulses are compared in phase comparator 4 e.g. an AND gate to provide the position control signal. The oscillators, also Fig. 2A, (not shown) comprise a comparator, filter, amplifier and voltage controlled oscillator. The signals on adjacent servo tracks are staggered relative to each other along the track.
