1430940 Educational appliances B E ROWE 28 Jan 1974 [31 Oct 1972] 50051/72 Heading G5G Teaching apparatus, e.g. for teaching arithmetic or spelling, comprises a card or, as shown, one of a plurality of sequential frames 18 which carries information such as a pictorial representation of an object together with a plurality of coded areas each including transparent and opaque regions; a plurality of symbols blocks 12 each carrying information such as a number or, as shown, a letter and bearing a unique coded area identifying that information; and a reader device 22 including a translucent screen 32 for supporting the frame 18, receptacles 40 for holding selected symbol blocks 12 with their coded areas in alignment with respective coded areas on the frame 12, and means for sensing the coded areas to check whether the blocks selected and ordered by the user of the apparatus correctly represent the information presented by the frame. The sensing means comprises light sensitive units 34, one for each symbol block, which receive light rays from a source 36 only when the blocks 12 are correctly selected and ordered, and then produce an output signal to energize a lamp 42 which illuminates the screen 32 to indicate a correct result. Each unit may also issue a further output signal when its respective block is correctly selected, whereby a lamp 44 is energized to illuminate that particular block. The frames may be carried on a reel 16 associated with supply and take up spools (28, 30) Fig. 4, not shown, which may be manually or electrically rotated. A plurality of the devices may be connected up to a central teacher's console.
